the essentials in brief

  • MA Crimew faces an arrest warrant for publishing the US no-fly list.
  • She published the sensitive data because they were of “public interest”.
  • It is not the first time that the Swiss has attracted such attention.

The Swiss hacker Maia Arson Crimew (formerly Tillie Kottmann) once again angered the USA: In the spring of 2021, she gained access to thousands of surveillance cameras from the Verkada company. Now she has published the US no-fly list. It lists the names of around 1.5 million suspected terrorists.

The 23-year-old blogs about how she did it. The first step was “boredom”. When she searched an apparently unsecured computer server of the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), she finally came across the “No Fly List”.

Hacker: Information of “public interest”

The Lucerne resident also writes in her blog: The list is “sensitive information”. Nevertheless, she is of the opinion “that it is in the public interest to make this list available to journalists and human rights organizations”.

«The feeling you have when you discover a vulnerability will never change. There’s always a feeling of euphoria and adrenaline,” Crimew told Swissinfo in March 2022.

Crimew is currently unemployed and in a “rather precarious financial situation”, as she reveals in her blog. Therefore she asks for support for her work.

Unlike other hackers, their goal is not to blackmail companies with their discoveries. The motives for their actions are namely activist. Just like when she hacked into 150,000 private surveillance cameras with a group and published the pictures.

“On the one hand, it showed how blatant the surveillance is and what is being monitored,” says the hacker. She cites video surveillance in US classrooms or intensive care units as examples. “That you can show that and also show that it’s not even done safely,” is her goal.

She was charged by the US Department of Justice with data theft, conspiracy and computer fraud. After the publication of the no-fly list, the Swiss woman is now again at odds with the US judiciary: politicians are calling for a congressional investigation, and Kottmann is threatened with an arrest warrant.
